Halogen vs LED bulbs

Halogen vs LED bulbs

It's the age-old question - why go for LED bulbs when halogen bulbs exist? They're cheaper and seem like they work exactly the same, right?

Well, halogen bulbs might be cheaper, but LED lights have lower running costs, are more energy efficient, amongst other benefits. Below we've listed all the differences between halogen and LED bulbs.

Energy efficiency

LED bulbs use 85% less energy than halogen bulbs. Even while using so much less energy, they still emit the same amount of light. This means that your bills will be kept down. This is possibly one of the most appealing aspects of LED bulbs.

Cost

LED bulbs are, in general, more expensive than halogen light bulbs. However, this is dramatically decreasing the more technology and research is done into LED bulbs. As they become more advanced, and commonplace, the price will become lower and lower.

Also, although the upfront cost might be lower, the running costs are much lower - we will mention this further on.

Brightness (Lumens)

LED bulbs are just as bright as halogen bulbs, plus they use less energy to achieve that brightness.

This means that a 7.5 watt LED bulb will give you the same brightness as a 50-watt halogen bulb. This is exactly why LED bulbs are more energy efficient.

Longevity

LED bulbs lost much longer than halogen bulbs. Although this is subjective and depends heavily on how much you use your bulbs - they will last ten times longer than halogen bulbs.

Again, this makes the higher cost for an LED bulb worth it as you don't need to replace it as often either. Think of it like an investment, which helps you save money in the long term.

Heat

Yes, LED bulbs are much cooler than halogen bulbs. This is because the majority of the energy used in LED bulbs is turned into light rather than heat.

Halogen bulbs become extremely hot, which you might have already experienced. They produce much more heat, which is why they use so much more energy.

Fittings

Don't worry, the majority of halogen bulbs can be replaced by an LED bulb. The fitting for the bulbs does not matter.
