Pros of Using LEDs when Growing Plants Indoors

Indoor Plant lighting

Indoor gardening and farming has become a big thing over the decades. More and more people are starting to grow their own vegetables and fruits in their own home. A number of indoor farmers say that LED lights are the best lights to use when growing plants.

Below are a few pros when using LEDs and what you can expect from them.

Energy Friendly and instant light They’re the best when it comes to power savings. LED lights consume a very small amount of energy to produce a bright light. Compared to an HID, they run at around 60% of the consumed power. LED lights also don’t need a warm-up time to turn on.

No Filament and No Heat They don’t contain the common filament that other bulbs need to burn to create light. Because of this, they can last a good 50,000 to 60,000 hours, unlike HIDs which usually start dropping their brightness at 2,000 to 3,000 hours. While turned on, they also don’t produce excess heat, which can be bad for the plants. In fact, LED bulbs are “cold to the touch” even when they’re kept on for a considerably long time.

Focused and Studier LED lights, paired with lenses, can focus their beams to a specific area. HIDs commonly require reflectors, which are not as precise when it comes to controlling light. They’re also faster and smaller when emitting light. Their materials are sturdier and tend to be more shock resistant.

Pricy but worth It They’re an expensive investment to start compared to HID bulbs. However, you do get a lot of savings considering that these bulbs last longer and they use less power. You also get to save on maintenance since you won’t be changing them as frequently as other bulbs.
