New Haven once had orange tinted streets. But now, street glow brighter with new LED street lamps. NEW HAVEN >> Orange-tinged streets are becoming a thing of the past as energy-efficient LED street lights are being rolled out across the city. So far the city has installed about 3,000 LED street light fixtures, said Giovanni Zinn, project manager in the city’s Department of Engineering. There are about 11,000 street lights in the city and all lights should be converted in about a year.

A group of residents on Lilac Street approached city officials in 2012 about installing better lighting in the area during 2012, Zinn said. The city did a pilot installation of 250 lights in the Newhallville neighborhood. After that, it became clear the city would benefit by installing the lights across all city streets.
