Is an Hour Enough to Help out the Earth?

Posted on 28/03/2012 by Arthur

Earth Hour is a global event first started by the World Wide Fund for Nature or WWF. The event urges people across different counties to turn their off their lights and go dark for one hour in order to raise awareness on the effects climate change—a problem that has become more pronounced than ever. This year, Earth Hour was celebrated on March 31 2012, starting form 8:30 pm till 9:30 pm, local time.

As people turn their lights off, it’s important to keep the whole point of the activity in mind. In today’s busy and fast lifestyle, having an hour of our daily schedule committed to not using any electricity will need discipline. We need to take the whole point of the activity outside the hour and fit it to our lifestyle. There are those who will quickly point out that an hour of being ‘off the grid’ is insignificant in terms of saving energy, but we at LiquidLEDs believe that Earth Hour is more of a symbolic event.

It is inspirational that more than 1.3 billion people worldwide got together and participated in the event. It symbolizes the need for us to become more aware of the changes caused by overusing our resources and the damages it is causing. Many people are now inspired to take the message of Earth Hour to their everyday routines by simply changing the bulbs they use at home to more eco-friendly and energy-saving lights, such as LEDs.

Solid-state LEDs have the potential of playing a big role in reducing the energy consumption in our homes and offices. These lights can save more than 80% of the total energy a traditional lighting system consumes. These bulbs also last much longer and can save big on operating costs. According to new studies, if these efficient lights where used globally, the whole world could gain 40% in power savings. This is equal to about 1.5 million containers of oil or 555 million tons worth of CO2 a year.

The advantage of using LEDs goes past lighting functionality and power efficiency. They provide good lighting for public areas, which enable people to conduct activities until the late hours of nighttime in safety. Well lighted public places also minimizes crime rate. LED lights are able to make landmarks appear more astonishing and beautiful, thereby increasing the pride of the residents.

Earth Hour may have already come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take its message to heart. Switch to LEDs and go beyond the hour.
